Frequently asked questions

Before your evaluation

Surgery

How do I know if I should have a nasal surgery evaluation?

If you often have trouble breathing through your nose, persistent congestion, a blocked feeling in your nose, snoring or symptoms that do not improve enough with treatment, it may be time to find out whether there is a structural problem that can be corrected.

My medical evaluation will identify the cause and determine whether treatment can be medical or whether nasal surgery could help you breathe better. Not every patient needs surgery.

Book an evaluation if breathing through your nose has become an everyday problem.

When is tonsil or adenoid surgery considered?

Tonsils and adenoids can cause problems when they become enlarged or are linked to recurrent infections, airway obstruction, snoring or sleep disturbances. If you or your child have these problems, an evaluation helps determine whether surgery would truly be beneficial.

Snoring, breathing with difficulty during sleep or having frequent infections is worth an evaluation.

When might ear tubes be needed?

Ear tubes are used mainly for certain middle ear problems, such as persistent fluid buildup or some cases of recurrent infections.

In children, fluid that stays behind the eardrum for a long time can permanently affect hearing. That is why a hearing evaluation is needed before deciding on treatment.

If your child has frequent infections, a feeling of blocked ears or you suspect they are not hearing well, it is a good idea to have their ears and hearing checked.

Hearing

When should I get a hearing test (audiometry)?

A hearing test is recommended if you notice you hear less, need to turn up the volume, often ask people to repeat themselves, have trouble understanding conversations or have ringing in your ears.

It may also be ordered as part of the workup for certain ear conditions or before some treatments. If hearing loss comes on suddenly and in only one ear, it is an emergency: seek an evaluation right away.

If you have doubts about your hearing, measuring it is the first step to know how well you are really hearing.

What does tympanometry evaluate?

Tympanometry is a quick test that gives information about how the middle ear and the eardrum are working. It can help detect problems such as fluid behind the eardrum or other ear ventilation problems.

It complements audiometry, since the two tests look at different aspects of hearing function.

It is a simple test that provides important information to understand what is happening inside the ear.

How can I tell if I should be evaluated for hearing aids?

If you notice that you hear but do not understand clearly, find it hard to follow conversations, need to turn up the TV volume or are starting to avoid gatherings because of difficulty hearing, a hearing evaluation is recommended.

The first step is not buying a hearing aid but knowing the type and degree of hearing loss. Based on the results, we can determine whether you need medical treatment, follow-up or could benefit from hearing aids.

A good fitting starts with a proper hearing diagnosis and a personalized solution.
